Furthermore, each of our study programmes has to be accredited by the Danish Evaluation Institute (EVA) on a regular basis. EVA is responsible for external quality assurance at all levels of education in Denmark, including higher education. It initiates and conducts systematic evaluations of higher education programmes. Accreditation is based on considerations concerning the institutions' ability to deliver programmes meeting certain quality requirements. When an institution is given the right to offer a certain programme, the institution must design the programme within a framework laid down by ministerial order.
The Danish accreditation system
As part of the Bologna process, Denmark has subscribed to a vision of Europe as a single education market. One major ambition is that the quality assurance of study programmes, including accreditation systems, is introduced in a number of European countries in order to improve transparency, mutual recognition of study programmes and comparability of the countries' quality assurance systems. In addition, efforts are being made to achieve improved mobility for students.
Accreditation is an academic assessment process which is independent of political and other institutional interests and which is based on criteria laid down centrally. In the Danish accreditation system, a principle aim is to create a system with a view to ensuring and documenting the quality and relevance of higher education in the Danish educational institutions. The accreditation system is based on the Danish Act on the Accreditation Agency for Higher Education, and the responsibility for implementing the Act lies with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
